Medicated eye drops that reduce inner eye pressure are often used as the first-line treatment for the most common type of glaucoma, “open-angle” glaucoma. However, when medications are ineffective or patients are unable to tolerate their side effects, surgery may be recommended. The conventional surgical technique called “trabeculectomy” involves making an opening to create a new drainage pathway, while “tube-shunt surgery” involves making an incision to place a tube in the eye that allows fluid to drain.
Aside from these surgical procedures, there is “laser trabeculoplasty,” which utilizes laser technology to create an opening that allows fluid to drain from the eye. As effective as these procedures may be in lowered intraocular pressure, they cannot reverse vision loss.
No matter the treatment, early diagnosis is the best way to prevent vision loss from glaucoma. At MAYO EYE CENTER, our patients’ needs and concerns are our top priority.
