Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of severe vision loss and legal blindness in people over the age of 65, is an eye condition that leads to deterioration of the central portion of the retina (the macula). As a result, the “straight-ahead” vision needed to read, drive, watch TV, identify faces, and perform fine-detailed work is lost. Nutritional therapy is currently the only known treatment for the more common “dry” form of the disease, while laser photocoagulation and injections are the treatment for sealing leaking blood vessels associated with the “wet” form. Now, new research involving implantation of an intraocular lens has proven to restore some vision in people with dry AMD and established forms of wet AMD.
