SEEING VIAGRA IN A WHOLE NEW LIGHT

By: | Tags: , , | Comments: 0 | December 8th, 2015

Some of the side effects and unintended consequences of a drug may be so far removed from their calculated effect that patients may not see any connection. Such may be the case with an erectile dysfunction (ED) medication and its ability to alter the vision of genetically susceptible users of the drug. It seems that sildenafil, which is the active ingredient in the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, can inhibit an enzyme that is important for transmitting light signals from the retina to the brain. As a result, people with normal vision who carry a single copy of the mutant gene for the blinding disease “retinitis pigmentosa” could be more susceptible to altered vision  as a result of taking Viagra.  The side effects that can affect some users of sildenafil (Viagra) include sensitivity to bright light, blurred vision, and altered color vision.
