There are three primary types of age-related cataracts. A “nuclear sclerotic” cataract is characterized by clouding and hardening of the eye lens at its center. When a nuclear cataract first develops, it can bring about a brief improvement in near vision (“second sight”), which is only temporary. A “cortical” cataract forms on the periphery of the lens cortex and develops spoke-like projections that extend from the outside of the lens toward the center.
